CHAPTER SIXTEEN

On Wednesday morning, Gresham Innes showed up with the turkey. It was a lovely turkey, twenty pounds, a goodly amount for four people, but Jennifer had a lot of recipes for leftover turkey to fall back on. She couldn’t help but wonder if this wasn’t Innes’ way of inviting himself back for another meal, especially when he started talking about how much he liked turkey soup.

Innes drove Jennifer back to town with him where she was able to pick up a few last minute items, and then he most willingly returned with her to Squire House. He seemed willing to stay with her as she waited for Sue, but Jennifer quickly thanked him for the ride and said goodbye before he got a chance to invite himself inside.

The wait was much longer than Jennifer had expected, and evening came before Beau and Jock scrambled, barking, to the front door. Jennifer went to the window and sure enough, there was the little blue sports car that had brought Sue to Brynstol months earlier.

Sue stepped out of the passenger side of the car and a tall, good-looking man got out from the driver’s side. From Sue’s descriptions of Brent Cooper with his sandy hair and light blue eyes, Jennifer needed no introduction. She was briefly taken aback, but her pleasure at seeing her friend overcame all other emotions and she hurried from the house to give Sue a big hug.

The two women laughed and giggled like schoolgirls over being together again, and then Sue introduced Jennifer to Brent.

“Welcome to Squire House,” Jennifer said, “What a nice surprise.”

“I hope I won’t inconvenience you. It wasn’t until the last minute that Sue decided I should come along.”

“No inconvenience at all,” Jennifer said. “I’m glad to finally meet you.”

Sue explained further. “Brent was set up to go with an encounter group to Monterey for the weekend, but then the group fell through, so he would have been left alone for the holiday.”

“Not the group, Sue,” said Brent sounding slightly perturbed. “The meeting was all that didn’t pan out.”

“Well, whatever.” Sue turned back to Jennifer. “Here we are.”

The women laughed again, and all joined in picking up luggage and other packages and carried them into the house.

Jennifer showed Brent and Sue to their room, and went downstairs to make some coffee as the two freshened up from their trip. Brent’s arrival was an unexpected turn of events. She had hoped to be able to spend hours talking to Sue the way they used to do, but guessed that wouldn’t happen during this visit. She was interested, however, in getting to know Brent. Reading between the lines of Sue’s letters, her impression of him was negative. She hoped that in person he could assuage that anxiety. Jennifer loved Sue like a sister, and she wanted only what was best for her friend in everything.

Sue and Brent soon came downstairs and joined Jennifer in the living room. Sue sat, but Brent walked around taking in every detail. Finally, he spoke, “This is truly a lovely home, Jennifer.
